Marin County Country Club Liberals Spoil George Lucas' Studio Expansion Plan
George Lucas knows how to win friends and influence people in and out of Star Wars fandom, does he not?I I guess we should thank those aging, affluent hippies. Lucas was planning to expand his studios. Since his creative contributions over the last fifteen years have been screwed up the original Star Wars trilogy numerous times, dropping the turd of a prequel trilogy, and CGI gophers in Indiana Jones, they have probably done us a big favor. Lucas might have used the new studio to make Han solo and Greedo kiss and make up for a third or fourth Blu-Ray release. On a less science fiction geek note, I like to see citizens exercise their political power. While I admit to be pretty much an unfettered capitalist who often is dismayed when Marin County progressive types keep out evil, blood-sucking corporations Wal-Mart at the cost of numerous new jobs and cheap, convenient shopping, I am usually thrilled when a certain gaudiness is kept at bay. Disney has been rebuffed by both northern Virginians over a sanitized Civil War theme park and by my fellow South Carolina faithful nixed a proposed theme park which would have turned Myrtle Beach into the next Orlando. We have too many yankees here already, folks. We might have foregone a hefty hunk of change, but even capitalists cannot turn all God’s country into real estate. I do find Lucas' denial that his plan was any kind of vindictive act against his neighbors. He has been on the defensive so much for his inconsiderate, greedy behavior in the last few years, public denial is his automatic response. He plans to sell the land for low income housing in an effort to appease his neighbors’ sensibilities. It is probably wise. Disgruntled Marin County residents have been known to join the Taliban.

The Real Issue with Sandra Fluke
The big issue surrounding the entire Sandra Fluke bruhaha is not whether Rush Limbaugh’s sexually charged epithet applies to her. Fluke’s sex life does not matter to me at all. She can spend every spring break willingly thrown naked into a Turkish prison for all I care. The issue about fluke is that she is so sadly indicative of today’s shameless, entitled young generation.
Look at what fluke has done. She is a law student, who, while almost certainly saying she was motivated to become a lawyer to change things for the better, is actually attending because she wants a job that will net her $75,000+ a year at her peak earning potential. As a law school graduate myself, I tell her that as a dream she needs to be ready to see fade away. She goes up to capitol Hill a young, sharp law student--a leader of tomorrow--to tell a congressional committee she has so much sex, she cannot afford the birth control and wants someone else to pay for it. Whether that someone has a moral objection is irrelevant, because I assume Fluke is a good progressive who believes moral relativity is the cure to the horrible crime of passing moral judgment.
What a classless and bratty thing to do. Classless in the sense you should not kiss and tell period, much less to a congressional committee where the entire country is going to hear every word of it. Bratty in the sense of entitlement. Fluke genuinely believes she should be able to have as much sex as she wants beyond what she can afford to protect herself from getting pregnant, so it is up to someone else to pay for her to do so. The mindset you have to have for such a rationale is spoiled beyond anything I can imagine.
The icing on the cake? Barack Obama calls Fluke to tell her her parents must be so proud of her. Without a hint of sarcasm, no less. Yes, I know I would love for my daughter to go before congress and testify she has so much sex, she needs subsidized birth control. They do not make proud parent bumper stickers for that one, folks.
The thing I take away most from the entire sordid affair is not that progressive ideology is rotten to the core. That goes without saying. The takeaway is fluke is indicative of the Millennial Generation conservatives are being warned that need to attract in order to survive electorally. Really? Because Fluke is a fine example of what happens when all sense of moral values breaks down in a society. If conservatives have to abandon moral principles in order to appeal to Fluke and her likeminded ilk--not that they would ever support conservatives, anyway--then I would rather lose the occasional election than aid the cultural slide into the sewer.

Wyoming Considers a Post-American Doomsday
The Wyoming House has advanced a bill that launches a study over what Wyoming should do in the event of a total political and/or economic collapse of the United States. the mayan calender's abrupt end for later this year is purely coincidental.
I agree with Ann Althouse--not my happiest moment, but allies are often a matter of convenience--over the issue. The federal government has most certainly had a cold War doomsday plan in place in case Washington were destroyed in a nuclear strike. One would assume in this day of terrorist acts perpetrated by small groups or lone wolves that could cause all sorts of mayhem, the doomsday plan has likely been updated post-9/11. It is only prudent for states to do the same.
The depressing part is how the concept is motivated by descending cynicism. During the cold War, we were threatened by a powerful, totalitarian enemy that could hace ended life on the planet if a conflict escalated between us. Post 9/11, we have religious fanatics using planes full of civilians to crash into buildings. What kind of sick mind even concocts such a plan, and how to you fight something so random that can still cause inestimable damage and loss of life. Now--and do not kid yourself about it, Wyoming fears the overspending of our own federal government may lead to the complete collapse of the United States. Whom can you consider the enemy of the republic once you believe the enemy is the republic itself?
I believe Althouse has a further point when she says Wyoming’s doomsday task force, should it ever come to pass, should advocate establishing a new government under Founding principles as quickly as possible. Of course, in my view that would mean reversing the answer to the grammar question settled at Appomattox It is not the United States is. It is the United States are.
